To Flip Up or Not Flip Up

Having had the Arai for more than 10 years, its time to replace it. Supposedly, a helmet has a life of 3-5 years. I was considering the Nolan N-103 flip up as its replacement. The internet is dangerous, because after reading this thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347210
I'm scared as hell of the flip up, although most NOBers own them.

This dude crashed at around---- This dude crashed at around 100mph
65mph and his flip up failed----- and his flip up remained solid

I guess no accident is created equal.

  1. To Flip or not to Flip that is the queston. I have read the reports and before you buy a flip or full face helmet you must consider that the flip up helmet structurally is not as sound as a full face helmet. However, I do not believe any helmet will survive a 100 mph crash. I remember Deacon and Alex were riding with a guy who had a full face helmet and unfortunately given the speed of the fatal crash his full face Arai failed him. The bar across the chin was compromised and broke. Thus, I think all one can do is pray and ride with some sense and hope that you or anyone else ever has to test these helmets. I do recommend that you also consider the flips from Shoei, Caberg, Schuberth, AGV as well as Nolan. I believe that none of the flip up helmets met Snell Approval. Comfort, fit, quietness of a helmets are also factors to consider. Good Luck.
