To Flip Up or Not Flip Up

Having had the Arai for more than 10 years, its time to replace it. Supposedly, a helmet has a life of 3-5 years. I was considering the Nolan N-103 flip up as its replacement. The internet is dangerous, because after reading this thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347210
I'm scared as hell of the flip up, although most NOBers own them.

This dude crashed at around---- This dude crashed at around 100mph
65mph and his flip up failed----- and his flip up remained solid

I guess no accident is created equal.

Map This!

Ok, now I'm getting a little geeky. But I could not resist sharing this with a group of travelers. If you don't have a Mac, go out and get one! The new iLife '09 just came out and its upgrade of iPhoto is going to knock your socks off. ( iPhoto, for you PC users is Apple's software that catalogs and manages your photos after you download them from your camera.) In this new release there are 3 big features that I like: Faces, Places and Travel Maps. Faces is simply face recognition so you can tag and then find all your pictures of a specific person in your library of photographs and place them into one 'album'. Every future photograph of that person will also be placed in that album. Some random person in the shot? Hit the 'facebook' button and it searches all of facebook for that person - scary! Next, Places. Places works with a gps-enabled camera (like the iPhone) and will mark the location and time of the pictures you take, and places a red dot on a google map. You can click the red dot and see what pictures you took in that location. cool. So just think of all the dots you would have on just one long NOB trip. And finally Travel Maps. It creates a nice book of your travels with maps and pictures integrated. Ok.... if that doesn't excite a group of high-tech motorcycle riders ...not sure you have a pulse! Check out the website for more details on this release, http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto.

Americade & Chicago Motorcycle Show

NOBers-this year the 1st trip is to Americade. Let either me or Erskine know who plans on going to Americade this year. Please let us know before Feb. 1, 2009 if you are planning to go. We have to secure hotel or motel rooms. If we do not hear from you by 2/1/09, we will assume you are not going or will be staying somewhere. In other words you are on your own for housing arrangement.

Don't forget the IMF Motorcycle Show is Feb. 6-8, 2009 at the Stephens Center on River Road in Rosemont, IL. We are planning to met after the show at Gibson's like we do every year. Please RSVP soon.

Ready to Ride!

I think you might find this fun to watch... I was not aware I was in video mode. But it reminded me of how disciplined we are as a riding group. When we're ready to ride, we follow the leader. In this case leaving the parking spots in Asheville, you were led by Joe. I was headed to shop!

Motorcycle Recalls

NOBers I have a subscription to many magazines, however, one that I find very good is Consumer News. Each month there is a section that talks about manufacturers' recalls. This month for those of you who ride Connie 1400 there is a recall for your bike. It is brakes, pedals and linkages. It may lead to brake failure. Kawasaki has not come up with a way to address. Those of you who own the bike should call 866-802-9381 to discuss this matter. I will continue to keep you advised. In the future I will attempt to warn each of you of potential recalls for your respective bikes.
